Introduction
3D prints from the Stratasys F270 FDM printer are supported with the QSR support material. QSR is a dissolvable support material and can be dissolved in a hot bath of NaOH solution. The NaOH solution has been typically created using Ecoworks packets. A more cost effective alternative to Ecoworks has been identified as Oxi Action powder.
Purpose
To determine if Oxi Action is a cost effective alternative to Ecoworks, and if so, at what concentrations of Oxi Action.
Process
- Design and 3D print test blocks with QSR support
- Submerge in heated and agitated test solutions
- Take pictures of the print and its support every hour
Solvent | Ecoworks 1/2 concentration | Oxi Action | Ecoworks | Oxi Action 2x concentration
Mix Ratio | A + B / 14L | 10g / L | A + B / 7L | 20g / L
Time (hrs) | Mass | 1.35g(A) + 0.65g(B) | 1.5g | 2.7g(A) + 1.3g(B) | 3g |

Conclusion
The Oxi Action 2x concentration mixture is less expensive and performs better than the original Ecoworks mixture. UCSB’s EH&S (Environmental Health & Safety) has approved for the Oxi Action solution to be disposed of down the drain. CNSI SOPs will make the switch from Ecoworks to Oxi Action.
